How to Choose a Mover in Fresno and Avoid Scams

Moving can be stressful enough without worrying about your belongings, unexpected charges, or a moving company that doesn't deliver what it promised. Whether you're moving across Fresno, relocating to Clovis, or leaving the Central Valley, choosing the right mover starts with doing a little research before you sign anything.

Verify the Mover's License

For moves that begin and end in California, household goods movers are regulated by the California Public Utilities Commission. Ask for the company's Cal T number and verify that its permit is active before hiring. California also recommends getting a written estimate and checking that the mover is properly insured.

For interstate moves, check the company's registration and authorization through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Get More Than One Written Estimate

Don't automatically choose the cheapest quote.

Get estimates from several movers and compare what each one includes. Ask whether the estimate is binding or nonbinding, what services are included, and what circumstances could result in additional charges.

A dramatically lower quote than everyone else should be a reason to ask more questions, not immediately book the company.

Be Careful With Moving Brokers

Not every company that gives you a moving quote is actually the company transporting your belongings.

Some businesses operate as brokers and arrange your move with another carrier. For interstate moves, FMCSA requires brokers to identify themselves as brokers and provide information about the movers they use.

Know exactly who will be handling your belongings before moving day.

Watch for Red Flags

Be cautious if a mover:

  • Refuses to provide a license number
  • Won't provide a written estimate
  • Gives an unusually low quote
  • Demands large payments upfront
  • Won't explain additional fees
  • Pressures you to sign immediately
  • Changes the price significantly on moving day
  • Has vague contact information
  • Won't identify the actual moving company

Federal authorities have specifically investigated complaints involving movers holding customers' belongings while demanding additional payment.

Read the Contract Carefully

Before signing, make sure you understand the services, price, pickup and delivery arrangements, valuation or protection options, and cancellation terms.

Keep copies of your estimate, contract, inventory, receipts, and correspondence.

Photograph Your Belongings

Before the movers arrive, photograph valuable furniture, electronics, artwork, and other important items.

Create an inventory of high value belongings and keep important documents and irreplaceable items with you rather than placing them on the moving truck.

Don't Let Price Be Your Only Factor

A reputable mover should be licensed, transparent about pricing, willing to answer questions, and able to explain how your belongings will be handled.

Reviews can be helpful, but don't rely on online ratings alone. Verify licensing and insurance independently before hiring.

Moving Into Your New Fresno Home?

A little preparation can make moving day significantly easier. Decluttering before the movers arrive can reduce both the amount you have to transport and the time required to unpack.

Choosing a mover is an important part of a successful relocation. Verify licensing, compare written estimates, understand who is actually transporting your belongings, and be cautious of unusually low prices or high pressure tactics.

If something doesn't feel right, take the time to investigate before handing over your belongings or signing a contract.
