Best Spots for Morning Joggers in Van Ness Boulevard

For runners and fitness-minded homebuyers, where you live can make it much easier to maintain an active lifestyle. Van Ness Boulevard and the surrounding areas of North Fresno offer convenient access to parks, paved trails, tree-lined streets, and outdoor spaces that are ideal for a morning jog.

Whether you prefer a quick neighborhood run or a longer weekend route, here are some spots worth exploring when living near Van Ness Boulevard.

1. Woodward Park

Woodward Park is one of the most popular destinations for runners in Northeast Fresno. The 300-acre regional park offers numerous paths and trails, making it easy to vary your route instead of running the same loop every morning.

The park is open daily, and early morning can be a particularly enjoyable time to run before the temperatures climb. With trees, open spaces, ponds, and views toward the San Joaquin River and Sierra Nevada, the scenery gives you plenty to look at along the way.

2. Lewis S. Eaton Trail

For runners who want a longer, more dedicated route, the Lewis S. Eaton Trail is one of the area's standout options.

The City of Fresno says the trail currently extends about four miles, beginning near the northwest corner of Woodward Park and running alongside Friant Road. It accommodates walking, running, cycling, and horseback riding, with scenery along the San Joaquin River.

Visit Fresno County describes the trail network as extending more than five paved miles through Woodward Park and beyond, with wide dirt shoulders for runners who prefer a softer surface.

3. Sugar Pine Trail

If you prefer a paved route, check out the Sugar Pine Trail. The trail begins near Fresno Street and Nees Avenue, follows the Friant Road corridor toward Shepherd, and continues east toward Clovis.

The City of Fresno specifically identifies Sugar Pine Trail as a route for running, walking, cycling, rollerblading, horseback riding, and wheelchair access. The trail's extensive tree plantings also provide a pleasant setting for an early morning workout.

4. Neighborhood Streets Around Van Ness Boulevard

Sometimes the best morning run is the one that starts right outside your front door.

Residential streets around Van Ness Boulevard can provide convenient options for shorter runs, especially when you want to fit exercise into a busy weekday morning. Before choosing a regular route, however, look for sidewalks, crossings, traffic patterns, lighting, and areas where you feel comfortable running.

One advantage of exploring a neighborhood on foot is that you get a much better sense of the area's character than you would from a car.

5. Trolley Park and Nearby Green Spaces

Trolley Park is another nearby green space worth knowing about when exploring the Van Ness Boulevard area.

While a small neighborhood park isn't necessarily a destination for a long-distance run, parks like this can provide convenient places to walk, stretch, meet neighbors, or add a short break to a neighborhood running route.

6. Mix Up Your Routes

One of the easiest ways to keep morning running interesting is to avoid doing the exact same route every day.

Try a shorter neighborhood run during the workweek, head to Sugar Pine Trail when you want a paved route, and save Woodward Park or the Lewis S. Eaton Trail for longer weekend runs.

Changing surfaces and scenery can also make your workouts feel less repetitive. Local running resources note that Woodward Park offers multiple routes, including its perimeter loop, interior paths, the Lewis S. Eaton Trail, and the Thomas MacMichael Loop.

7. Start Early During Fresno Summers

Fresno's summer temperatures are an important consideration for outdoor runners. An early morning run can be much more comfortable than waiting until later in the day.

Bring water, pay attention to weather conditions, and adjust your distance or pace when temperatures rise. If you're exploring a trail for the first time, it's also smart to check current park information before heading out.

8. Make Running Part of the Neighborhood Lifestyle

One of the benefits of living near Van Ness Boulevard is that an active lifestyle doesn't necessarily require a long drive to find somewhere to exercise.

The surrounding North Fresno area gives residents access to parks, trails, recreational facilities, restaurants, shopping, and other everyday conveniences. For homebuyers, these lifestyle details can be just as important as the home's floor plan.

9. Connect With Other Local Runners

Running doesn't always have to be a solo activity. Fresno has an active running community, and local events can be a fun way to meet other runners.

Fresno Run Club currently hosts a Saturday Stride Social at Woodward Park, with a 1 to 3 mile run designed for different experience levels and paces.

Check the organizer's current schedule before attending because meeting times and locations can change.

Finding the Right Fresno Neighborhood for Your Lifestyle

For runners, living near good trails and parks can turn exercise from something you have to schedule into something that naturally fits into your day.

Van Ness Boulevard's location provides access to several outdoor destinations, with Woodward Park, the Lewis S. Eaton Trail, and Sugar Pine Trail offering different experiences depending on your preferred distance, surface, and scenery.

At Sawatsky Real Estate Associates - Cygnus Estates, we encourage buyers to look beyond the house itself and consider how a neighborhood supports the way they actually live.
